About Mrs. Clifford (ACUSD Art Therapist (2017-2018)

Erica Clifford, M.ED, LPC
Licensed Professional Counselor
Mark Twain Art Therapist for Grades K– 8th

What is your Education Background?
I received my associates degree from Lewis and Clark Community College in 2003, then went on to receive my bachelors degree (Art major, Psychology minor) from Southern Illinois University of Edwardsville in 2006.  I decided to move out of state and attend the University of Louisville where I received my masters degree in Educational Counseling Psychology and Expressive Therapies in 2009.

How long have you worked for the Alton School District?
I have only worked with the Alton School District for a short time.  I began my position the beginning of November 2017.  However, I have worked in a school setting as an art therapist since 2009.

What interested you in becoming an art therapist?
I actually was inspired to become an art therapist after meeting with an art therapist while I was attending high school.  I struggled a bit my freshmen year, and through a program called "Operation Outreach" I was set up to meet with an art therapist.  I knew right away after experiencing the process of art therapy that I would become an art therapist myself.  I always had a strong desire to help others and to the arts, so it just seemed right.

What do you like about your job?
I enjoy the ability to assist students to express themselves  through art. When students create something meaningful, or find a meaning in creating it gives them a since of pride and accomplishment.  It is rewarding to work with students who can use art to release and contain thoughts and/ or emotions that they could not express before.

When you do your own art, what do you do?
I love to to work with clay, mostly hand building, and sculpture.  I will occasionally draw and paint, but 3D pieces are my favorite.

What do you enjoy doing when you are not at work?
When I am not at work I cherish spending time with my family and friends.  I enjoy being outside with nature, and gardening.  I also have a passion for cooking and if I wasn't camera shy, I would love to be on the food network's cooking show "Chopped".
